Tickets kopen was trouwens niet zo makkelijk: ze zouden vandaag "at noon" live gaan. Ik zit momenteel in het buitenland voor het werk dus ik had al hemel en aarde moeten bewegen om 13u onze tijd een half uurtje vrij te kunnen houden om het nodige te boeken. Bleek dat er om 11u55 Schotse tijd een bug in het systeem was geslopen en dat het zo snel mogelijk opgelost zou worden. Volgens de facebookpagina van het festival was ik niet de enige die in dezelfde situatie zat - wat een tijdstip ook om tickets live te laten gaan.
Maar goed, na een weekje planning wist ik perfect wat ik zeker wou doen en welke tickets ik absoluut moest scoren. Behoudens een Tomintoul event geleid door Master Distiller Robert Fleming heb ik alles wat ik wilde doen. Concreet gaat het om het volgende:
Woensdag 29 april: A Taste of Moray - leuk opwarmertje vanuit een leuke geografische insteek, Gordon & MacPhail die z'n hoofdzetel en winkel heeft in Elgin dus ze zullen hopelijk hun hometown alle eer willen aandoen.
For over 120 years and through four generations of family ownership, we have built longstanding relationships with many of Speyside’s distilleries, matching spirit to our own bespoke casks to create single malt Scotch whisky of exceptional quality. Celebrating Speyside, this tasting will comprise of single malts from five distilleries local to Elgin, the spiritual home of Gordon & MacPhail, and will span our Distillery Labels, Discovery and Connoisseurs Choice ranges.
Donderdag 30 april: Glenburgie Distillery Manager's Tour - Ik ben recentelijk enorme fan geworden van Glenburgie. Een beetje een minder bekende distillerie die zelfs geen officiële bottlings heeft maar die op bourbon oh zo prachtig kan zijn. Normaal gezien is deze distillery niet toegankelijk voor het publiek, vandaar dat deze rondleiding door de Distillery Manager voor mij een geen te missen kans was.
Tour Glenburgie Distillery with Lisa Glen, Manager, a distillery which is never normally open to the public, followed by a dram of Glenburgie single malt whisky.
Enjoy an exclusive tour of the recently reconstructed Glenburgie Distillery, now one of the most modern in Scotland and only occasionally open to visitors. Completed in 2004, and incorporating the latest technology, it was built beside the site of the original distillery, founded in 1810.
Lisa will show you round and explain how the single malt for which she is responsible remains true to the traditions of the distillery. At the end of the visit to the distillery you will have a rare opportunity to enter a Duty-Free warehouse before tasting a dram of the single malt whisky.
Donderdag 30 april: Glen Moray's Hidden Gems with Dr Kirstie McCallum - een tasting met zeldzame casks geleid door één van de weinige vrouwelijke figuren (ook bekend voor het revampen van de Bunna, Deanston & Tobermory lijnen) in de industrie én een hand bottling op het einde van de sessie: what more could you ask for?
An exclusive evening tasting with Dr Kirstie McCallum, Head of Whisky Creation, including samples from the rarer casks in our warehouses and unveiling her own specially selected Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival cask which will be available for hand bottling for the first time on the night.
Vrijdag 1 mei: A VIP Whisky Master Class - Stuart Urquhart of Gordon & MacPhail - tja, lees hieronder wat er allemaal voorzien wordt, het lijkt me prachtig om een tasting te volgen met iemand die ook verantwoordelijk is voor de bottlings. En gezien de recente Connoisseur Choice bottlings echt wel top zijn denk ik dat ik mooie dingen ga te zien/proeven krijgen.

Join Stuart for a Whisky Master Class with the team from the Whisky Castle at the Richmond Hall, Tomintoul.
This masterclass offers you the opportunity to enjoy a professionally tutored whisky tasting experience with one of the most revered suppliers of exquisite malt whisky to the Whisky Castle.
Stuart is part of the fourth generation of the Urquhart family and currently the Operations Director for Gordon & MacPhail. His role includes the overall management of the Gordon & MacPhail distillery, including the bonded cask warehouse. As such, Stuart has some amazing bottlings at his disposal. This means that this VIP tasting will be very special. We will start the evening with some of the current range of bottlings we stock throughout the season including the Discovery, Distillery label and Connoisseur Choice ranges. To give you an idea one of the bottlings we have already chosen is the 19 year old Pultney heavy sherry cask which is one of the best single cask bottlings the Whisky Castle has ever stocked. We will then move on to 3 bottlings that Stuart has picked specially for this tasting. These will be older whiskies, from amazing casks that are on a different level. Enjoy these amazing whiskies while Stuart shares his expert knowledge and technical expertise.
The Tasting Format
6.00pm - Take your seat at your reserved table at The Richmond Hall in Tomintoul.
6.15pm - Introduction and welcome to the evening by The Whisky Castle. VIP Masterclass commences where various, specially selected single malts will be tasted and discussed as well as some very special and exclusive bottlings chosen by Stuart. Whisky paired canapes will be served during the tasting.
7.30pm - Your opportunity to put questions to Stuart, with the option to buy what you have tasted during the evening, at a discounted price.
8.15pm - You will be escorted to a local Hotel in Tomintoul, where you can enjoy a traditional light buffet. There is also a well-stocked whisky bar with a great Scottish atmosphere.

Zaterdag 2 mei: Time Flies When You're Having Rum at The GlenAllachie Distillery - dit lijkt me een zeer leuke. Een nieuw project waar Glenallachie aan aan het werken is in avant-première kunnen proeven kan nooit slecht zijn. En ik hou wel van een goed rummetje.
We're gearing up for the release of a brand new product...MacNair's RUM! We have sourced exceptionally high quality rum, filled to casks specially chosen by our Master Blender, Billy Waker, and laid the spirit to rest on site at The GlenAllachie Distillery.
During the tasting, our Distillery Manager, Richard Beattie, will take you on a journey of how we sourced and finished a number of rums and showcase the impact of excellent wood management, whilst you enjoy a selection of five exquisite rums in the comfort of one of our 16 warehouses. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to be part of our Rum story and to be one of the first to sample what we've been working on behind closed doors.

What makes a good whisky? The age of the whisky or the cask that the whisky has matured in?
At the beginnig of the new century the industry told us that "the age matters" because of overloaded warehouses after the downturn in the ninties.
Nowadays, a lot of older whiskies have disappeared yet the demand is higher than ever. More and more younger or non-age statement whiskies are on the market and now the industry tells us "the cask matters", but which is it?
Is age the only indicator of a good whisky? What about younger whiskies that spend their lives in excellent casks?
Lets find out with an entertaining blind tasting!
Sample 6 pairs of Speyside's finest whiskies (each 10ml, total 12 x 10ml). Nose them, taste them and compare them. The final step is choosing your favourite and you might be surprised when we reveal what the samples are...

Maandag 4 mei: Select the 2005 Family Cask with George Grant at Glenfarclas Distillery - Deze stond met stip op #1. Wat een unieke kans is dit, samen met George de 2005 versie van de upcoming Family Casks mogen selecteren. Ik word al lyrisch als ik er over nadenk.
Thanks to the foresight of previous generations of the Grant Family, Glenfarclas is the only distillery to produce a collection of whiskies as complete as The Family Casks, with at least one cask bottled every year from 1954 to 2004. George Grant, our Sales Director and the 6th generation of the Grant family, nosed over 200 different samples to find the perfect casks to make up the first release back in 2007, which featured one from each vintage from 1952-1994.
At the Spirit of Speyside Whisky festival, join us for a tour of the distillery followed by a tasting of selected Family Cask samples led by George Grant himself. Guests will have the unique opportunity to rate these whiskies and help select the first official Family Cask from the year 2005, which will then be bottled as part of the next release. This annual event is the only time we allow guests to experience what it’s like to be on the Glenfarclas tasting panel and influence the next release of The Family Casks.
Ondertussen door heb ik ook nog een time slot om een hand-filled van de Mortlach festival bottling te vullen en eentje van Linkwood - en uiteraard zijn er nog distilleries die Festival Bottlings gaan voorzien (Aberlour al zeker, Glenfarclas ook - waarschijnlijk zulllen er nog wel zijn). Het mooiste aan het verhaal is dat mijn vriendin m'n privé-chauffeur zal spelen tijdens deze dagen. Enkele mooie avondactiviteiten (al dan niet whisky-gerelateerd) zullen dus zeker nog aan het programma toegevoegd worden.
Bij interesse zal ik zeker proberen om na afloop een update te geven over hoe het was - needless to say kijk ik er al enorm naar uit.
