Whisky
Snobs retain exclusivity with single malts having only nine per cent of the total global whisky market while blended amber occupies 91 per cent. Asia will continue to lead consumption with Taiwan, China and India playing cheerleaders. Central Europeans are drinking less whisky but the drinking populations of Eastern Europe, South Africa an d Russia have upgraded to premium whiskies.
An emerging middle class makes Africa the new India for whisky; the drinking classes who enjoy premium whiskies including single malts will be celebrating more, mainly in West and South Africa. The Middle East continues its love affair with whisky, though more as a trading market due to religious compulsions. Single malt promises to Sheikh and stir the UAE.
Low-end brands flourish in Lebanon and Syria. North America keeps walking- one of the biggest markets for both blends and malts. Whisky will stay the premier Indian liquor of choice. Trends suggest a shortage of premium whiskies; spirit companies will be forced to experiment with new labels dressed up in marketing spin. In India, more power to the bootlegger is predicted, with high duties discouraging buyers from shopping in government stores. Expect collector's editions and new offerings from independent bottlers though.
A new generation of whisky drinkers, in their early thirties, will be saying slainte next year. This includes more women; they drink 30 per cent of the world's single malts. Japanese whiskies will seduce Europe, Asia and South Africa in 2011. Irish whisky is looking for newer markets. Smoky Islay malts and food pairing will be popular. Casks will be favourite investments for the new cognoscenti.
