Whisky Galore

Rare Bottle Salvaged From 'Whisky Galore' Ship in Bonhams Scottish Sale
A bottle of Ballantine's from the "Whisky Galore" ship, The SS Politician, is being offered at Bonhams annual Scottish Sale in Edinburgh between 17 - 20 August. It is believed to have been salvaged from the wreck of the ship in the 1950s or 1960s and is being sold with photographs of the salvage operation at an estimate of £1,200 – 1,800.

Let wel " It is believed to have been salvaged" en zonder label, dat zou dan weer vertrouwen moeten wekken.

Tale of Whisky Galore celebrates 70 years

4 February 2011 schreef:This weekend marks the 70th anniversary of the grounding of a ship carrying thousands of bottles of whisky in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland.

The events which followed on the island of Eriskay inspired a book and a film - Whisky Galore.

James Cook has been to visit the island to find out more. (Red: zie de videoclip op bovenstaande link)

Artikel: Real Whisky Galore story is still being written "Seventy years on it remains one of the most romantic island tales."

Collector chasing SS Polly and Whisky Galore relics
5 February 2011 schreef:A businessman has spent the past 10 years on the trail of relics washed up or salvaged from the shipwreck that inspired Whisky Galore.

SS Politician, whose cargo included more than 250,000 bottles of whisky, ran aground off the island of Eriskay on 5 February 1941.

Keith Hewitt, who runs a business in Grangemouth, believes its story is now as famous as the Loch Ness Monster.

Facts galore
* In 2006, Maurice Watson, who worked as a cadet on the SS Politician, returned to Eriskay to mark his 80th birthday
* The ship was headed for Jamaica when it ran aground on the northern side of Eriskay in bad weather
* Eriskay is sometimes referred to in Gaelic as Eilean na h-Oige, or Isle of Youth, according to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council)

Whisky Galore bottles fetch £12,050

Whisky Galore bottles fetch £12,050
Two bottles of whisky salvaged from the shipwreck that inspired the book and film Whisky Galore have been sold for £12,050 after an online auction.

They were part of the cargo on the SS Politician, which sank off Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides in 1941.
Scotch Whisky Auctions, which sold the bottles, said they had gone to a buyer in the UK after worldwide interest.
They were among eight bottles recovered from the wreck in 1987 by Donald MacPhee, from South Uist.

The whisky is not thought to be fit for human consumption.
